While large gaps between the teeth can lead to misalignment issues and trouble chewing, a smaller gap is not usually harmful. That said, they can definitely be cosmetically bothersome, especially when they affect the front teeth!
If you’re not fond of your diastema (the official name for a dental gap no wider than 0.5 mm), there are a couple of treatment options that can fix it. Here’s what your cosmetic dentist might suggest.
Option 1: Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is made out of a moldable resin, meaning your dentist can sculpt the material into whatever shape is necessary to conceal cracks, chips, and small gaps. Depending on the exact nature of your diastema, they could use the bonding to add thickness to your teeth until they appear symmetrical and seamless.
Option 2: Porcelain Veneers
If there are other aesthetic flaws you’d like to fix along with your diastema, porcelain veneers could be a cost-effective solution. Your cosmetic dentist will customize one or more thin shells, then adhere them to the front-facing portion of your tooth (or teeth). Once complete, veneer treatment will make it look like you never had a gap to begin with.
Option 3: Clear Aligners Like Invisalign
Yes, clear aligners like Invisalign and ClearCorrect are a type of orthodontics, which can be a more involved process than your other two options so far. But if your diastema is the result of bite or dental alignment, they could be the best solution for your smile. Be sure to ask your dentist whether you’ll need clear aligners for one or both arches of teeth.
The way you feel about your smile impacts your confidence – and your motivation for taking good care of it! Even if the gap between your teeth is only “diastema-sized,” seeking out treatment to improve your dental aesthetics is perfectly valid. Your cosmetic dentist has many options for closing small gaps, so rest assured, there’s a solution that’s perfect for you and your pearly whites.
